If you want your campaign to get noticed you need to build a profile. If you want ‘the powers that be’ to take you seriously, you need to create a profile that says you are organised, professional and a force to be reckoned with. Likewise in order to attract the best people to join you, especially influential people, you need a profile that says you are responsible, serious, credible and constructive.
Some suggestions on creating a profile:- The first thing you need is a name. Choose a name that says something about the issue and/or your group. Make sure the name is easy to say and easy to remember. If possible find a name that is “for something” as opposed to “against”. Use of positive proposals and words are more motivating and help to keep the group away from a negative ‘nimby’ type image.
- An eye catching logo that can be easily recognised and understood is great for building a profile and gives a clear visual image to your campaign. It can be used for leaflets, your website, headed paper, Tshirts etc.
- Think up some good catchy slogans that hammer home your message.
- Start a website.
- Find some patrons – well known people who will lend their names in support of the campaign. Think of likely people who have previously shown themselves to be supportive of similar campaigns, celebrities from the world of music, art, film, sport, business, academia, law, the media. Ideally approach potential patrons through a personal contact. They will be more likely to trust and support a cause if the idea is proposed by someone they know.
- Ask other organisations or groups to lend their support by publicly endorsing your campaign and so adding credibility and weight.
- Put an effective structure in place to deal with the media. Build good relationships with journalists and reporters, appoint good spokespeople and be ever-ready to respond publicly to events as they happen.
- Use every opportunity you can to get your name and message before the public eg. public meetings /talks, information stands in strategic and busy places, petitions, leaflets, posters, banners, placards, car stickers.
