The internet is a new and evolving tool and one of its recent innovations is the development of online social networking sites. This seems to be the direction the web is moving – from isolated websites to networked communities.

A social networking site is a virtual network of people who are categorised by their areas of interest. This allows people like you to find other people of like mind. As a campaign resource it is a free web presence which could help you build your numbers and your support base, and also be a useful tool for organising events.

There are dozens of social networking sites but our main presence is on:

Ning

By joining http://livingdemocracy.ning.com/  you will help build the Living Democracy community and grow a critical mass of people who can find each other and self-organise around issues that effect them.

The experience of Living Democracy is that FaceBook is slow and its security has not been proven, but it is moderately easy to use.  WiserEarth is a more focused network of people who share a common concern about social and environmental issues. It is smaller and friendlier than FaceBook, but it too is rather slow. To learn how these sites work there should be a “Help” button in the main menu giving you a tutorial. You will have to register with your name, e-mail and other details. (It's important to keep a record of the email address and password you use.) You may be asked for photographs and a home address, but this is generally optional, so use your discretion.
